If you’ve been here you know how scenic our property is …but few have seen the amazing back property featuring a meandering stream, beaver pond and dramatic cliffs with moss covered boulders.  Our tent campground now showcases that beauty.

Come experience it …it is truly park-like.

IMG_20180808_155900

Just five private campsites, each with great features, including a water spigot at each site, offer a true back woods experience! (Yet close to civilization)

IMG_20180806_184134

Two sites have great fire pits …all sites are near or on our stream and have direct access to a logging road and hiking on the 140 acre nature reserve.

Pine needled trails and pine needles at the tent sites for comfortable sleeping!

This is first update since announcing camping at Eastern Plant. Work has begun and five outstanding sites have been selected. All sites may see deer, and other harmless wildlife. Did we mention Bald Eagles frequent the area. Two sites will overlook a large active beaver pond and be near a stream. Those two will also enjoy the playful sounds of frogs. One site will be in the midst of the forest, near a stream and high ridge with access over a foot bridge. Another will be near stream, second footbridge and small waterfall. The fifth site will have a gorgeous view to a salt marsh, and be near a stream, small waterfall and dramatic vertical cliff. Large glades of ferns are  near most sites.

These are not your typical campsites!

IMG_20180721_161948.jpg

All sites are spaced apart for privacy, with the last site being the most private.

Again, all sites will have their own cold water spigot. Unique among campsites!

We will be doing more cleanup and start of trails tomorrow. Our target opening is August first…which may be optimistic…but we will try.

Contact us at 207 607 1284…text is best but calls are ok.

ROCK TRIPE …COME SEE INCREDIBLE COLONIES!

02 Monday Feb 2015

native plant, PHOTOGRAPHY

Ironically, something that gathers attention here almost more than the plants we grow here in Maine, is rock tripe. It graces several spots along our WildWalkWays trails. WHAT IS ROCK TRIPE?

ROCK TRIPE ON OUR GRANITE …INCREDIBLE SPECIMENS

IMG_20141215_102537

Rock tripe is the common name for various lichens of the genus Umbilicaria that grow on rocks. A lichen is a symbiotic relationship of a fungus and algae. Rock tripe can be found throughout northern parts of North America such as New England and the Rocky Mountains, generally in pristine environments. They are edible when properly prepared and have been used as a food source in extreme cases when other food sources were unavailable, as by early American northern explorers.

There are many species of rock tripe around the world. The species that graces our granite ledges Umbilicaria mammulata, the smooth rock tripe. Probably the most common rock tripe in the northeast, it can reach diameters upwards of 15 inches – this is a lichen of some significance.

Let’s start our investigation of smooth rock tripe with a look at the name. According to most sources, the English name “rock tripe” comes to us via France, where it is called tripe de roche, literally “rock guts.”  “Tripe” is the word used to describe the tissue from the stomach of a ruminant animal (a cow, for example), which is used for food (mmmmm). This does not bode well for the edibility of this lichen.

IMG_20141215_102443

Yet, it turns out that rock tripe is indeed edible. Of course, the palatability no doubt depends on the species in question. For example, in many Asian countries, rock tripe is considered a delicacy and is much sought by connoisseurs. On the other hand, the Inuit consider rock tripe to be a starvation food, eaten only as a last resort. The Cree, however, ate rock tripe as a regular part of the diet, often using it as a thickener for fish broth. Each of these peoples is eating a different species, which one should keep in mind if one is deciding to give rock tripe a try.

rocktripe3

Reading through the history of the use of this lichen, the description of the Inuit’s rock tripe best fits smooth rock tripe – a starvation food that you’ve got to be pretty desperate to eat. George Washington’s men filled their bellies with it at Valley Forge in the winter of ’77 – they lived, but didn’t thrive. This could be in part because the lichen can act as a purgative. Or it could be because it’s not terribly nutritious – it will fill you up, but your body won’t get much from it.

Eating rock tripe is not something to be undertaken lightly. For one thing, it is full of bitter compounds and therefore must be soaked and boiled in several washes of water to render it edible. What is often left is this rather slimy mass. Good for thickening broths. It can be roasted, or fried. Personally, I think I’d have to be pretty darn hungry to give it a try.

IMG_20141215_102342

Let’s revisit the name once more, this time looking at the genus, Umbilicaria. If it looks familiar, it should – think of umbilical cord. See the similarity? Both are derived from the Latin word umbilicus, which means navel – the point at which the umbilical cord attaches. If one takes a close look at rock tripe, one sees that it has a navel, too – right about at its center. It is from this navel that the lichen attaches itself to its rocky home.

Our rock tripe colony changes at various times throughout the year, because as the weather changes, so does this lichen. When times are good and there is plenty of moisture, the lichen is soft and pliable, like a piece of good leather. In times of drought, it becomes quite brittle, shriveling up a bit and prone to damage. When it’s in this brittle state, it is somewhat less impressive to the casual visitor, but even so, it is worth checking out.

If you are checking it out on our granite rocks, please do not pull it off the rock ..IT HAS TAKEN DECADES TO GROW. Anyone seen doing that will be ex communicated, from our place. Once you know what it looks like, you can head out and look for rock tripe on the rocks on your own. And if you decide to sample it, stop on in and let me know what you thought – starvation food or culinary delight.

RHODOS, WILDWALKWAYS, WILDLIFE IN AN ENTERTAINING TALK!

Then you need guest speakers. I can provide an entertaining, beautiful, educational, captivating slide show presentation ON GROWING RHODODENDRONS IN MAINE-OR ANYWHERE. My talk describes our wonderful location in Georgetown Maine and shows the WildWalkWays trails, highlights the magnificent rhodos and other fine plants in a totally natural setting, talks about and shows the local scenery and gives exclusive pointers on growing rhodos that no one else talks about …all in a fun, upbeat way.

Even if you or your club are not rhodo or plant aficianados, the pictures, presentation, and scenery will excite you …and maybe make you a rhodo lover.

A PERK of having me talk: I give out FREE PASSES to WildWalkWays at speaking engagements. WildWalkWays is the trail system at Eastern Plant that meanders thru forest, bog, ravine, traverses a rushing stream, overlooks a salt marsh and more. NO OTHER NURSERY HAS ANYTHING LIKE IT.

There is a fee depending on travel time  TO BOOK AS GUEST SPEEAKER OR INQUIRE just email me at easternplant@juno.com  Thank you …Mark Stavish

Here is an unsolicited review of a talk I gave

 Hi Mark,
Your presentation of knowledge and passion for rhododendrons in a truly magnificent natural environment was over the top.  I love the stature and grace of mature rhododendrons, they are awesome and you certainly have them.  From the bottom of my heart, I am most grateful for your generosity last October that brought you to me and more importantly to our group of enthusiastic rhododendron lovers.  Everyone was truly thrilled and we want you to come back, and I know you made a lot of friends very interested in what you are doing there at Eastern Plant.  Hopefully, many visitors, including us.
Thank you again Mark for all of your efforts in making your visit yesterday, it was real thrill for all of us.  We will all look forward to learning more about your efforts in the future.
 Best to you
Sincerely,
Tom Flanigan
President Connecticut Chapter American Rhododendron Society
