Be it groundcovers, ferns wildflowers, Rhodos, and natives…Eastern has tough, field grown plants with one of the  highest success rates…since 1984.

Here are just a few NEW ITEMS  you don’t want to miss. There will be many more NEW ADDITIONS announced later...but don’t wait to order these.

BROOM SEDGE Andropogon virginicus Glomeratus

A VERY NEAT ORNAMENTAL ‘GRASS‘

Andropogon glomeratus--aka Andropogon virginicus var. abbreviatus 2012-11-11.jpg

IMG_20171221_140742

A TRULY EXCITING plant for fall and winter interest with dramatic copper color in autumn. (Technically this is not a grass) Rarely seen in gardens, even rarer for sale, yet an easy plant to grow. Clumps of grassy foliage to about a foot may go unnoticed til fall, when dramatic spikes of flowers rise on stalks to two feet or more. The mature seed pods resemble clusters of old fashioned little brooms atop vertical stems. Highly ornamental…they last from Sep into spring swaying in the breeze becoming fuzzy later in winter. This very adaptable plant is fine in wet or average soils, best in sun. A splendid native for winter interest in meadows, shrub borders and native plantings for sustained color when there isn’t much going on. Much more appealing than so many of the common ornamental grasses. Try some! Happy in zones 5-8.

Half gallon equivalent, each $9.95  3 for $27  6 for $51  12 for $99  They look best in irregular groups…buy a bunch.

TO ORDER, EMAIL YOUR WISH LIST TO easternplant@juno.com  We will get back to you…include your phone.

AMERICAN HOLLY  Ilex opaca

SPECIAL PLANTS FROM NORTHERN PART OF RANGE!

Image of American holly

Really one of the nicest natives yet hard to find. These are grown from plants near the northern limit of their range in northern NJ…which will give them extra hardiness…an important note. You are getting genetically tougher plants. They will grow in zones 5-8. This “old fashioned” plant has tons of beauty. Holly will tolerate heavier soils and even somewhat wet spots. NOTHING BEATS THE RED BERRY DISPLAY OF HOLLY IN WINTER. Even without berries, the lustrous, evergreen foliage is colorful all year. Great as a specimen, hedging and screening. Ultimately they form a columnar, pyramidal shape to 20 feet…though that takes many years…and they can be pruned. As they get older branches can be cut for holiday arrangements. These are probably the ONLY HOLLY  you can buy that are not greenhouse grown…that’s important…they will live…as they’ve lived outside their whole lives. Fine in most zone 5 thru 8 climates and prefers average to moist soil. Give some shade in far northern areas.

Three year olds 6 inch…$13 each or 3 for $29  6 for $49   Five year olds  8-12 inch $16  or…3 for $45  6 for $79

TO ORDER …just email your wish list to easternplant@juno.com. Include your phone number.

clethra.jpg

clethra-alnifolia-le-ahaines.jpg

Our exclusive form blooms from head to toe! Nothing beats this for summer fragrance. An easy plant in full sun to half shade and it tolerates wet and clay soils. Bright green, finely serrated soft foliage fills a multilayered, upright columnar plant to about 6-8 feet with gently cascading limbs. In August, bright white panicles of flowers light the end of every stem…and release a fragrance best described as cinnamon-vanilla apple pie! NOTHING BEATS ITS HEAVENLY AROMA WAFTING THRU THE GARDEN! Fall color is a cheery bright yellow. Excellent as specimen, in shrub borders and any native plant garden. Established plants grown outside. Limited quantities. Happy in zones zones 5-8.

16-24 inch each $16.95 or  3 for $26   6 for $45.  24-32 inch each $24.95  or 3 for $45 or 6 for $85  inquire for larger quantities.

MAJOR CHANGE …FERNS CAN NOW BE ORDERED SINGLY

POPULAR, MAINE GROWN NATIVE FERNS, SINCE 1985

OUR FERNS ARE A BARGAIN

sensfern

YOU CAN NOW ORDER FERNS BY THE EACH

ORDER NOW BEFORE WEATHER GETS WARM

    …..
WHY GROW FERNS? These are some of the easiest and prettiest plants you can grow. While native to woodland conditions usualy they really don’t need that and some can take a fair amount of sun. You don’t need a wooded setting for most & many thrive in average garden soil. Another reason to grow them: due to habitat destruction ferns and other natives do not grow in abundance as they once did. It’s a fact nature has been changed by man, plants no longer spread as they once did & planting them helps nature distribute them. Sadly development won’t stop.
…..
SIZE AND HARDINESS Most are equal to what you’d buy in half gal. or gal. pots elsewhere for 2-4 times our price. They are not tiny plugs other firm sell. All are hardy zones 4-7 unless noted. Some are naturally smaller like Ebony Spleenwort.
…..
JUMBO Sizes at 30% more are available for most, just indicate if wanted.
…..
…..
SHIPPING 15% FOR ORDERS UNDER $250. MINIMUM  SHIP AMOUNT IS $6.
SHIPPING 10% FOR ORDERS OVER $250 FREE SHIP FOR ORDERS OVER $600
…..
HOW YOU SAVE
We grow them in flats or beds, healthier for them than being in pots. Just before shipping they are removed carefully when dormant, soil shaken off and put into bags …they never dry out. On arrival, if your ground, is thawed, even if it’s cold you can plant …planting and storing info is sent with the order. Many must be sent early before weather warms, do not panic, they can be kept in the fridge for weeks or outside in a shaded spot under leaves. We begin shipping to mild areas in Feb and continue into May. By not paying for dirt you save a large amount and the plants are just as healthy if not more so.

It is very drought tolerant when it has established; we have clients report back that it does well in very sandy soil. Leatherwood Fern is also called Marginal Shield fern. Their sturdy fronds endure winter, even when they’re weighted with snow, then the new fronds emerge in Spring. They are finely cut, very frilly & lacy composed of hundreds of leaflets, spraying up in graceful symmetrical whirls in a bold, bright green color. While very frilly, it is also quite tough and does great in rich, damp soil, yet does tolerate drier conditions and clay too. Here is a historical Toothed Wood fern tidbit from 1922; “Horticulture reports (28 million) Toothed wood fern leaves were shipped from Bennington, Vermont to florists & nearly $100,000 in fern labor wages were paid.” That is a lot of fern fronds! EACH $4.95  5 FOR $24 10 FOR $45 30 FOR $125 60 FOR $235
……
…..
GOLDIE FERN  Dryopteris goldiana
GOLDIEFERN
Goldie Fern becomes a massive specimen, 3-5 feet tall, somewhat like Ostrich Ferns but more cascading with a deeper color. Their fronds tips are slightly shaded with a golden green, hence the name. Their emerging fronds have a fascinating exotic hairy/fuzzy like coating, resembling tan tarantula legs! Close inspection reveals an interesting striped brown pattern. They’re the most shaggily clad of all the hardy ferns. The covering is composed of transparent, white & brown elongated scales, giving a “tiger stripe” effect. The stems do a back flip after poking up, then they right themselves after a day or two. “Tooth’s” on Goldie are a bit larger than the Cinnamon fern frond. Goldie Ferns are also called Giant Wood Ferns. Their fronds last into late fall before going dormant. Easy to please in light shade. They love woodsy soil, but will do fine in most all conditions. EACH $6.95  5 FOR $27 10 FOR $49 30 FOR $142
