From a small bulb, 2 shiny leaves, often with snow still about emerge; then a perky frilly yellow lily~like flower pokes up as a charming sunny treat! The 2-3 inch, lance-like glistening foliage is often streaked & mottled like a trout’s back: hence the name. Trout Lily forms impressive colonies & is amazingly easy, tolerating clay, damp or average soil without care. Like other wildflowers it can be planted in beds at the edge with perennials, lawns & any bright areas in spring! Cherokee Indians regarded it’s bloom as the time to fish for trout, as in nature it was found near trout streams…but it is at home in any Zone 4-8. Also called Deer’s Tongue, Adderleaf, Star Striker
