CREEPING SNOWBERRY   Chiogenes hispidula VERY RARE   We may be the only source for this gem that is a wonderful, true creeper in the rhodo family. Spicy leaves and white fruit adorn tiny evergreen leaves. In nature it likes to grow on moss or rotting logs, forming a dense mat. It’s a  northern plant, gracing cool forests. Needs afternoon shade.  A plant none of your garden friends will have. At one time this was common in northern areas and even into the cooler parts on the mid Atlantic; development has nearly wiped it out…help bring it back. zones 3-6   4-6 INCH PADS $11  3 FOR $29

SWEETFERN-Comptonia peregrina  This fascinating native is actually related to Bayberry, it’s not a fern. The soft, slender leaves are finely serrated and do have the aroma of hay when crushed. Totally carefree and a great plant for sunny, well drained areas. It will grow in sand, gravel or loamy soil and likes full sun. Foliage holds let and then turns a shimmering bunt orange. Grows to 2-3 feet tall and as wide. zones 3-8   10-15 inches $8 3 for $22SWEET

MOUNTAIN CRANBERRY Vaccinium vitis isea-minus  This is the easier to grow sub species. Here’s a scarce evergreen creeper with edible fruit. It is also called Lingonberry. It needs coolish summers so great for New Eng. and upper midwest. We grow this in the ground making it MUCH MORE adaptable than any others grown in pots-remember to ask that if you get it elsewhere-we hope you don’t. Those shipped in from the west coast will not adapt. The tiny waxy shiny leaves are on multitudes of stems to 5 inches high. In late spring, dangling pink bell flowers adorn the plant, later giving way to edible red berries that are great in jams or eating raw. Much in demand in Europe. NEEDS acid peaty soil and half sun. Thrives in New Eng. zones 3-6   4-6 inch $5.95  3 for $16  6 for $30  Others charge up to $16 each for the very same thing

The lingonberry (Vaccinium vitis-idaea), above, is one of two plants that play a large role in the subsistence economy of boreal Alaska. The other is bog blueberry (Vaccinium uliginosum). Institute of Arctic Biology ecologist Christa Mulder and her research team are investigating whether the presence of the invasive legume sweetclover (Melilotus officinalis) can alter the production of fruits of lingonberry and blueberry.

Leucothoe fontanesiana ‘PERFECTION’
AN ELEGANT EVERGREEN GROUNDCOVER & FINE COMPANION PLANT
THE BEST LEUCOTHOE  …’PERFECTION’
leucothoeLEUC
After 25 years observation there is NO OTHER leucothoe that performs as well. These came thru last winters 20 below unscathed. Related to rhododendron, a perfect tall groundcover for massing or as a specimen. Long sprays of white bell flowers in June and evergreen, lance shaped leaves are on gently cascading stems forming a billowy mound. Foliage is very dark in color with coppery red new growth for constant appeal. Excellent cascading over walls, stream edges or mass planted. I got this in NJ 25 years ago from a local grower and noticed how disease free it was…when I moved to Maine it came with me. Now 25 years later it still outdoes any other leucothoe, is totally hardy & does not get leaf spot. Our mature plants draw praise. Best in somewhat shaded areas. zones 5 thru 7  8-12 inch $12  3/$35    12-15 inch $15  3/$44 15-18 inch $21  2/$39

RHODO CYNOSHURE A superb late blooming rhodo that always performs yet is rarely seen. It features lush, large dark green leaves and a plant covered in Rich, large deep pink flowers with peachy highlights—the flowers really glow, are long lasting and appear when most others have finished. Hybridized by the Shapiros in NJ who created some very nice things and considered it their finest. This is hardy fully here in coastal Maine. Easy to care for and well branched. Exceptional dark and large foliage too–pretty all year and  makes into a full broad plant. 3 years old 6-8 inch $21  12 inch $33

RHODO BRACHYCARPUM  Possibly the hardiest species on the planet and to boot it has superb foliage. “Brachy” has tropical looking leaves which shine all year.  As a bonus it blooms in summer, when most rhodos are finished. OUR SPECIAL FORM OF BRACHY HAS LARGER FLOWERS THAN MOST AND INCREDIBLY TROPICAL LOOKING LEAVES with  a shine. The pink tinged, white flowers cover the plants, and while not huge add a burst of bloom that is 100% dependable–brachy can survive 35 BELOW ZERO–hardy even in Minnesota! When grown in sun it remains compact to 4-5 feet wide and tall. When grown in shade it is more open but still retaining its tropical look with highly lustrous leaves.  Several sizes 3-4 inch $16  4-6 inch $21  8-12 inch  $35  We have grown hundreds of brachys over the years to select out only the best of the best ..every visitor comments on them, most take one or more home.
