WHY GROW FERNS? These are some of the easiest and prettiest plants you can grow. While native to woodland conditions usualy they really don’t need that and some can take a fair amount of sun. You don’t need a wooded setting for most & many thrive in average garden soil. Another reason to grow them: due to habitat destruction ferns and other natives do not grow in abundance as they once did. It’s a fact nature has been changed by man, plants no longer spread as they once did & planting them helps nature distribute them. Sadly development won’t stop.

HOW YOU SAVE
We grow them in flats or beds, healthier for them than being in pots. Just before shipping they are removed carefully when dormant, soil shaken off and put into bags …they never dry out. On arrival, if your ground, is thawed, even if it’s cold you can plant …planting and storing info is sent with the order. Many must be sent early before weather warms, do not panic, they can be kept in the fridge for weeks or outside in a shaded spot under leaves. We begin shipping to mild areas in Feb and continue into May. By not paying for dirt you save a large amount and the plants are just as healthy if not more so.

It grows to 2 feet or more under perfect conditions, slowly forming bold expanding clumps with very dark green, thick fronds having a more macho appearance than the frilly types. It is very drought tolerant when it has established; we have clients report back that it does well in very sandy soil. Leatherwood Fern is also called Marginal Shield fern. Florist will often use the colorful species in arrangements do to it’s heavy textured, partly evergreen fronds that get from 24-30+ inches depending on conditions. They are finely cut, very frilly & lacy composed of hundreds of leaflets, spraying up in graceful symmetrical whirls in a bold, bright green color. While very frilly, it is also quite tough and does great in rich, damp soil, yet does tolerate drier conditions and clay too. Here is a historical Toothed Wood fern tidbit from 1922; “Horticulture reports (28 million) Toothed wood fern leaves were shipped from Bennington, Vermont to florists & nearly $100,000 in fern labor wages were paid.” That is a lot of fern fronds! EACH $4.95  5 FOR $24 10 FOR $45 30 FOR $125 60 FOR $235

GOLDIE FERN  Dryopteris goldiana
GOLDIEFERN
Goldie Fern becomes a massive specimen, 3-5 feet tall, somewhat like Ostrich Ferns but more cascading with a deeper color. Their fronds tips are slightly shaded with a golden green, hence the name. Their emerging fronds have a fascinating exotic hairy/fuzzy like coating, resembling tan tarantula legs! Close inspection reveals an interesting striped brown pattern. They’re the most shaggily clad of all the hardy ferns. The covering is composed of transparent, white & brown elongated scales, giving a “tiger stripe” effect. The stems do a back flip after poking up, then they right themselves after a day or two. “Tooth’s” on Goldie are a bit larger than the Cinnamon fern frond. Goldie Ferns are also called Giant Wood Ferns. Their fronds last into late fall before going dormant. Easy to please in light shade.
